Paytm to raise $300-500 million for local e-comm, Renu Satti steps down to be new retail COO

BENGALURU/MUMBAI: Paytm’s parent One97 Communications is raising $300-500 million to push its onlineto-offline (O2O) retail business and get customers to use its platform for making payments, people familiar with the matter said. Renu Satti, who was heading Paytm’s Payments Bank, has stepped down from her current role and will take on the COO’s mantle at New Retail, as the vertical is being
called.

Paytm is currently in talks with US-based investors as well as its existing shareholder — SoftBank — for the latest funding, which is likely to value the digital payments firm at about $10 billion, the sources said. The new financing will be directed towards the hyperlocal O2O business, which aims to shore up footfalls for offline stores by offering deals and discounts through Paytm’s app. Shoppers will pay through QR codes in these stores, thereby increasing transaction numbers for the digital payments player. For now, merchants won’t be charged a commission by Paytm. They will, however, have to pay a fee for logistics and marketing costs.

Paytm has diversified into movie & events ticketing and hotel bookings, among others, to grow transactions. Paytm founder & CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said, “Paytm wants to enable same-city commerce and help restaurants, grocery stores and pharmacies grow their walk-ins through offers and deals. We have already tied up with 4,500-5,000 merchants.”

Paytm Mall, which has also deployed the O2O commerce model, will remain separate and target a different sort of use case. While Paytm’s New Retail is retailing food, groceries and medicines, which are immediate needs, Paytm Mall’s O2O model has centred around tie-ups with brand stores for facilitating deliveries.

New Retail won’t have any warehouses unlike how the supply chain works for horizontal marketplaces like Paytm Mall. Modelled on China’s Meituan-Dianping, a group-buying website for local consumer products and retail services, Paytm wants to focus on in-store commerce through New Retail. Paytm claims it’s on a run-rate of 5 billion transactions and $50-billion gross transaction value.

San Francisco, Apple has updated its app store to version 5.1 with voice support and a revamped search interface which, much like the App Store and iTunes Store, will now highlight the trending searches.

The update will allow users to tap the microphone icon along the search bar to dictate their search details instead of typing.

The search results page has been revamped as well, featuring a new card-based interface that would smoothen sorting through the results, 9to5Mac reported late on Friday.

"Search has been updated with an enhanced design. And it's now powered with speech recognition technology for better search results. With a fresh look and the addition of speech recognition technology, it's never been easier to find products, stores, sessions, and more," said Apple, describing its new app search look.

Additionally, Apple has also made updates to its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) app for iOS, promising bug fixes and performance improvements.

"This update includes bug fixes and improvements in several areas, including accessibility, stability, and video downloads. In addition, videos can be viewed by collection and platform on tvOS," Apple wrote in its update notes.

The WWDC and Apple Store applications are available for free on the App Store for iOS users.

Jio Rs.99 Recharge With 500MB Data per Day Launched Exclusively for Jio Phone Users

July 20, 2018

Jio has launched a new Jio Phone recharge that offers customers 500MB data per day for 28 days. This new Jio recharge is in addition to the existing Rs. 49 and Rs. 153 packs for the company's 4G feature phone, and has been launched alongside the new Jio Phone Monsoon Hungama exchange offer. The new Rs. 99 Jio Phone recharge will reduce users' monthly spends straight away by nearly 50 percent, the company claims. There's also a Rs. 594 recharge that provides users with unlimited data for a period of six months.
The new Rs. 99 Jio recharge seems to be aimed at consumers who find the 1GB data per day bundled with the Rs. 49 pack insufficient but do not consume 1GB per day either (under the Rs. 153 pack). Along with the bundled 500MB data per day, it will give customers 300 SMS messages for the 28-day validity period. As usual with Jio plans, voice calls are free.
As for the Rs. 594 Jio Phone recharge, the validity period is 6 months and customers can consume unlimited voice and data, the company says. There are no bundled text messages with this pack.
Under the new Monsoon Hungama offer, customers can get the Jio Phone for a refundable deposit of Rs. 501 starting today upon exchanging a feature phone. The feature phone needs to be in working condition and less than three years old to be eligible for this Jio exchange offer. Those who avail the handset under this offer will also get 6GB of complimentary data, which the company says is worth Rs. 101. Customers will receive a new Jio SIM with the handset opting under the new offer, though they can opt for Mobile Number Portability (MNP) to retain their existing number. https://csl.ink/43xQ
